November Voice Notes
The most shared idea this month: Awareness, in all its guises!
Hello Wild Folk,
October was a busy coaching season, and I’ve been travelling to London more for some in person sessions. Face to face work brings another level of intimacy and depth to voice exploration. I relish the humanness of it!
And that human factor plays a big role in the journey one takes when exploring the power and depths of a voice.
How do we show up in the world?
How do we interact with others?
How do they respond to us?
I’ve recently presented to The Chicago Bar Association, coached Female Founders, Engineers and Human Rights Lawyers.
Awareness, has been a recurring theme.
It’s one of the many entry points to voice work, and it gets you in deep really fast!
Try these on for size in the coming weeks. Grab a little notebook and start observing and reflecting on how you show up in the world.
Let me know what you unearth,

Awareness, 3 Ways
Know Thyself
Do you know the impact you have on those around you?
Your voice is one of your most powerful tools for building trust and influencing others. Do you know how you’re using yours and how it makes others feel?
The impact you have and the power you carry matters!
When you walk into a room, the energy changes. Both your voice and physical presence speak volumes and the ripple affects are tangible.
Some questions to consider:
What do you notice others do when you talk? Do they lean in and listen, zone out or recoil?
How does your energy change the room? What do you notice others do when you approach?
Do you really listen to what others are saying or are you just waiting to jump in and have your say?
Who is easy to talk to? Who do you find it difficult to connect with?
It’s all to easy to go about daily life without really paying attention.
This is your invitation to open up the floodgates of awareness. Really dig into the inquiry. How does the way I use my voice effect those around me? Husband, wife, child, collegue, father, mother.
Read the Room
Being prepared is one thing, and success requires you to have your ducks in a row. But preparation alone isn’t enough. You have to be aware of what’s happening in the room. To read body language, listen to vocal tone and be open to pivoting.
I’ve been a teacher and workshop leader for over 20 years. I always, to this day, come with a plan. A plan AND an open mind.
We need to be okay throwing the plan out of the window should the situation require us to do so.
Planning + Awareness = Result
Your Audience
Who are you speaking to? You wouldn’t talk to a child in the same way you would a judge.
Preparing, thinking ahead, even visualising who you are communicating with has a powerful impact.
How you speak out loud, your body language and the energy you put out into the world changes when we’re in front of different people.
You don’t have to perform, or become someone else, but you DO need to be mindful of who you are speaking with. My legal clients dial up the warmth when meeting with a client, but go all in on the authority in court.
Consider:
Who are your audience?
What do they need to know?
What do you need to know?
Do you need to build a relationship and dial up the warmth, or do you need to position yourself as a voice of authority?
Are you trying to inspire and build trust? (A happy mix of authority and warmth)
Are you trying to persuade? What does that look like for this particular audience?
No two audiences are the same. We must approach each group, each meeting, each individual with awareness. Who are they are and what do they need?
